how do rc helicopter brakes work?

I have seen many rc helicopters online and I have noticed some features such as brakes. How are the brakes used? Or is that just an automatic function of a rc heli? Also, I would like to know some local Helicopter stores like radio shack, because I really want to buy a Fly Eagle. Thanks.

    I can’t answer for R/C birds, BUT…

A rotor brake on a real helicopter is a mechanical device that can be used to STOP the rotors, or permit the engines to be started and run-up without the rotors turning (it locks the rotors).

It would NOT be used in flight… stopping forward motion is done by bringing the cyclic back.

They just throttle down, and the craft slows immediately.

If you have a old gas chainsaw you might take a look at its insides. The braking mechanism is similar in the chainsaw to the braking mechanism in a helicopter. It allows the engine to spin freely, disengages the blades from the rotor, and locks the blade in place. This is done with a mechanical mechanism rather than an electronic one. On an RC model helicopter it would be controlled by a circuit board, but the actual braking is mechanical.

Its important to note that the brake mechanism on an rc helicopter isn’t how the helicopter stops its travel. To do that you have to reverse the direction of the air flow. All the braking mechanism serves to do is to inhibit the rotation of the blades.
