wcharly Learning how to fly an RC helicopter is a challenging and exciting process. But it is one to undergo carefully and slowly. After all the time and money that you have invested in your new hobby you certainly don’t want to be one of the 50% of first time users to crash and burn! There are several ways to learn, you can get an instructor, use a flight simulator or teach yourself step by step. Regardless of how you learn, it is best to take your time and go slowly. Remember that learning to fly is part of the process and have fun with it!
The first step when you learn how to fly an RC helicopter is to set it up right. This is not easy and it is almost impossible to do yourself. Find a good instructor and ask or pay for some help to get it set up correctly. A helicopter that is set up right will fly better, respond better and be more predictable. A properly set up helicopter will also help you keep it out of the trees and off the ground! A good instructor can also give you helpful tips to keep you up once in the air.
Next, you need to study your RC helicopter. Study the safety procedures of both your helicopter and the field you are going to use. An instructor will likely use a buddy lead while you are learning how to fly an RC helicopter. This is a lead that ties his remote to your helicopter and allows him to take the controls if necessary. This process can dramatically decrease your chance of crashing and thereby saving your helicopter and protecting you from a crash. It is important to remember the helicopter can be dangerous and must be operated safely at all times.
