When you are starting a hobby or simply upgrading your existing hobby it is important to take into consideration the realities of the hobby. Flying RC helicopters is a lot of fun and there are a lot of very affordable options. It is important to look for an RC helicopter that is ready to go out of the box and one that is known to be dependable and sturdy. Of course, while looks aren’t everything I’m sure you want a cool looking heli too! One good option is the Walkera Dragonfly RC helicopter.
The Walkera Dragonfly RC helicopter comes with everything you need except batteries and is sturdy enough to learn on. Of course, even with a ready to fly unit you need to check some things out first. Look over the owner’s manual and see the adjustments you need to make. Balance is very important and it can definitely get thrown off during shipping. You don’t want your new helicopter to have a lot of vibration on its maiden flight. That is an invitation for bad flight performance. The main rotor blades should be balanced as well as the flybar. The owner’s manual can help you with this.
One issue that can surprise new hobbyist is to check the position of the battery pack. Once again, with all helicopters check the owner’s manual for proper positioning. The battery pack is relatively heavy and it can really throw off the center of gravity of the Walkera Dragonfly RC helicopter. If the balance is correct the skids in the back should be a little low in the front or completely level. If the skids are out of balance slide the battery pack around until the unit is level. Make sure the battery is secure and double check the balance
When flying a smaller helicopter like the Walkera Dragonfly RC helicopter always make sure to remember safety first. While it can be flown indoors it is important to be careful, large areas are best but the room needs to be cleared regardless. Holding your initial practice indoors does have the advantage of not having the elements such as wind and rain. Be sure to protect both your possessions and the helicopter from damage by removing what you can and covering any corners that may damage the helicopter.
Do your test flight indoors and soon you will be able to move it out to some wide open spaces!
